The Gorai river, a distributary of the mighty Ganga, used to flow south past the city of Kushtia, until sandbanks clogged it up. To open the new North Caspian oilfield, Kashagan, many challenges had to be overcome. Shallow water, muddy sea bottom, floating ice fields endangering every offshore structure, had to be harnessed to create a strong and safe production location.
